I’m coming to you live from sunny, 77 degree Tampa, Florida 😎
I’m shooting content with my social team in Tampa, FL (where they're based) for the upcoming release of my book When I Start My Business, I’ll Be Happy: A Practical, No-BS Guide to Successful Online Entrepreneurship on April 15.
How to stay within your scope of practice when you create content
Online business news you need to know
I pulled into New York’s JFK airport at 5am on Sunday and ran through the 16 degree parking garage seriously regretting my decision to leave my coat only to get inside the terminal and realize…
🤪 I left my luggage in my car.
Off to a good start… 😂
Luckily, the rest of the trip has been smooth sailing —
I settled in on Sunday, walked beneath the palm trees on the beautiful River Walk, and grabbed the BEST dinner at Naked Farmer (BBQ chicken, brussel sprouts, salad, and mac & cheese 🤤) before settling in to watch my man Conan host the Oscars.
I got all of my stuff together (could you imagine if anyone searched my suitcase at the airport?! 😜) and took an early morning walk for coffee along the river. Before I shoot any video content, I *always* get outside and move a bit -- I think you show up so much better on camera!
Then me and my social media manager, Natasha, got down to business — shooting over 20+ face-to-camera videos for my book release and everyday (evergreen) content for IG.
After the shoot, I drove to St. Pete for a delish hoagie (always a hoagie, never a sub -- I'm a Philly girl ❤️ 🥨) and a quick work sesh at Bandit Coffee.
We've got another full day of shooting today and then tonight I'll head back to my boys on Long Island. (These are the texts I get from home while I'm away for work ⤵️)
If I told you that you had to do a 2-day content shoot tomorrow... how would you feel, Reader?
Are you full of endless ideas? Do you have ideas but you’re not sure how to turn them into content that attracts more customers?
💡 Here’s how to come up with content ideas.
First, I look back at my week and think of*:
Questions people have asked me
Problems I’ve solved
Realizations I’ve had (maybe in answering a question or solving a problem)
Relatable Moments like stories that I can turn into a lesson
Triggers things that have pissed me off or that I really disagree with in my industry
Timely things like holidays or time-of-year (ie, filing taxes, end of year)
Trends that I can weigh in on
*I’ve adapted this list from things I’ve learned from Kevin Chemidlin, host of the podcast, Grow The Show.
Some weeks, I only fill out a few of these. Other times, I’ve got loads of ideas for each!
I'm careful to stay within my scope of practice in each piece of content — that’s what you can legally do/not do/say based on how you’re licensed, credentialed, etc. in your state.
In order to stay within my scope, I don’t:
Tell people what to do. I can’t tell you whether you should eat at Olive Garden or Cheesecake Factory, but I can educate you on the differences and encourage you to do what sounds best.
Preach. Before creating content, I take a moment to put my teacher hat on — I’m here to share info, not tell you what to do.
Use absolute language. I never say, “Everyone needs an LLC” or “You must do X, Y, or Z.” I say things like, “generally speaking,” or “what works for most,” and then qualify it by saying, “but of course you need to find what works for you.”
Speaking of - time for me to go wrap up this shoot!
